"...a gaze that pierces heaven
flows ablaze into the ink of night.
This palace of the people now commands
the covering roof be rolled away
to contemplate the ranks of constellations..."
(from the poem ‘The City of the Future' , Velimir Khlebnikov, Collected Works of Velimir Khlebnikov: Selected Poems Vol. III, Eng. trans. Paul Schmidt, ed. Ronald Vroon, Harvard University Press, 1991, p. 73).
Zone dates from the beginning of Pignatelli's artistic career. It is his first reversal of the concept of image. These portions of asphalt, characterized by unused road markings, now almost worn away, become worlds in which anything may happen. They are free areas that merge with their surroundings in order to leave room for the imagination.
